Linkage institutions are channels that connect the people to the government. This can include the media, interest groups, and political parties. One of the major forms of linkage institutions is elections. The public gets to vote on policies and who they want to be in office; it is a chance for citizens' voices to be heard. Elections can influence an individual's political beliefs because depending on where a person lives, the community and people around them will probably be swayed in favor of one candidate; this influence an individual to prefer and support a candidate over another. Recent elections have shown how divided the American public is over political beliefs. This past presidential election of 2016 has seen an extreme divide between the public. The Democratic nominee was Hillary Clinton and the Republican nominee was Donald Trump. The strong divide this past election has led it to be a critical election, which means there is a significant change in power. Celebrities and social media had a voice and there were even protests and riots. By analyzing the different sides of the election, their different points of view and possible reason for the strong divide can be understood.
On the Democratic side, was Hillary Clinton. According to her website, she has a progressive vision for America's future. This means that in terms of the economy, it should work for everyone, not just those at the top. Another one of her main beliefs is having affordable and universal healthcare for everyone. From this candidate's YouTube channel, there is a video that in unfavorable for Donald Trump. It is titled, "Mirrors" and shows images of young girls looking at a mirror. However the voice over is of Donald Trump saying very derogatory comments are women. Therefore, this argues that people should vote for Hillary over Trump because she will respect women. This supports her stance because she believes in women's rights and opportunity. Therefore the ad is showing how compared to Trump, Hillary should be the candidate that people vote for because she will try to advance women's rights unlike Trump, who has insulted women.
Donald Trump is affiliated with the Republican Party. His slogan that was known widely throughout the course of his campaign was "Make America Great Again." On the topic of immigration, he believed in stricter laws, including building a wall between the United States and Mexico. In terms of budget, his stance was that government should cut their spending more. An artifact that Donald Trump supported was a video ad that showed how Hillary Clinton would lead to "failure and "corruption," even showing her email scandals as an image in the video. The voice of Trump is heard as he says how a vote for Hillary is a vote for the group of people who has been responsible for "disastrous trade deals, and massive illegal immigration." Therefore this video is arguing how Trump as president would benefit the American people. This suggests that under the Trump administration, there would not be as much illegal immigration. The artifact relates to Trump's political stance because he favors a ban on some groups of migrants who are entering the U.S.
The past presidential election has been one of the most controversial ones. With the widely accessible media, many American were able to understand the political stance of the candidates. In the end, with both positive and negative media exposure, Donald Trump was able to win the U.S. presidential election.
From social media , newspapers , or radio , different forms of media can influence the public. Media is a form of a linkage institution because it connects the people to the government ; citizens can learn about new laws in place or people can also have the chance to spread awareness about a particular topic. Based on the source of news consumption and bias present, this affects the way the public think and hence the way they vote . News sources have different biases and through examining sites on opposite sides of the spectrum, biases can be identified. The Blaze is a news source where the audience is more consistently conservative and The New York Times is one where the audience is more consistently liberal . A current event that has been written about on both of these websites is when football players take a knee during the national anthem as a form of protest for police brutality . On The Blaze , there was an article that was recently written by Dave Urabnski on Octo...
Linkage institutions are channels that connect the people and the government . Some of these forms include the media, election, and interest groups. Most notable are political partie s, that have roughly similar political aims and beliefs. After researching five political parties ranging from very conservative to very liberal, I chose to focus on the Democratic Party .
